Are you interested in films with a spiritual message? Check out
the spiritfilm@yahoogroups.com list. To quote from the home page,
Spirit Film covers mainstream and independent films with
spiritual themes such as redemption, transformation (such as rites
of passage) and what Joseph Campbell calls, "the world behind this
world." "Spiritual" does not necessarily mean "religious,"
although religious films such as Scorcese's The Last Temptation
Of Christ are certainly part of the spirit film genre. Still, the
main focus of the list is on films such as Abel Ferrera's Bad
Lieutenant (which deals with redemption), David Mamet's The
Edge (forgiveness) and Lars Von Trier's Breaking The Waves (faith and miracles). These films may also be termed "spiritual
entertainment," "mystical movies" or "spiritual cinema."
These "spiritually challenging" films explore the dark side of
spirituality, the struggle between, say, faith and doubt, or
forgiveness and vengeance. More to the point, they deal with these
issues in provocative, often unsettling ways (Breaking The Waves
breaks my Christian friends into two camps, those who hate the
film and those who love it).
