POWER POP

Pete Townsend, the lead guitarist and creative mastermind of the British Invasion band the Who, coined the term 'power pop' in the 1960s. The essential elements of power pop are:

1) Guitars, and lots of them, ranging in sound from jangly to chunky 2) Simple backbeats and tambourine-friendly rhythms 3) Catchy melodies sparkling with vocal harmonies 4) Songs about boy-girl relationships 5) Songs under three minutes long.

Power pop got rolling with the bands Badfinger, the Raspberries and Big Star in the early 1970s. These bands and the modern day counterparts expanded on the music and sound of the Beatles: Lyrics with substance, unforgettable melodies and arrangements that were often unpredictable. One example of a great contemporary power pop band: The Grammy Award-nominated group, Fountains Of Wayne.

The soundtrack for Blood and Roses is almost wall-to-wall power pop for two reasons First, in terms of Carrie-Anne's video diary, power pop was generally on one of the stereos when she was in the room. During post-production, audio designer Alex Levy added songs from director Paul D. Schneider's collection of power pop CDs. They simply went through the albums, choosing songs that seemed right in terms of lyrics and mood.

Ian Runeckles is a British pop fan who lives in the U.K.; he came up with the following links to various power pop sites, retailers who specialize in the music, internet discussion groups, and a bunch of other stuff. As time permits, we will list all the songs in the film and provide links to both the artists and places to buy the CDs.

THE HOLLIES

Soldiers in the so-called 'British Invasion,' the Hollies got started in the early 1960's in Manchester, England. With songs such as The Air That I Breathe, He Ain't Heavy (He's My Brother) and, of course, Carrie-Anne, the band enjoyed considerable success around the world in the 1960s and 1970s. Founded by lead singer Allan Clarke, lead guitarist Tony Hicks and rhythm guitarist Graham Nash, the band sounds similar to the Beatles with one exception: The Hollies' soaring three-part harmonies. Despite - or, perhaps, because of - numerous changes in band members, the band continues to perform live shows, although mostly in Europe.

You may know the Hollies by their Top 40 hits, but we recommend the Hollies' albums, including our favorites: For Certain Because, Evolution and Butterfly (all recorded between 1966 and 1967). The song that begins the film, the Posies' cover of the Hollies King Midas In Reverse, is from this period, often dubbed 'psychedelic era.'

This section contains links and other stuff related to the Hollies. In time, we hope to add a list of recommended Hollies' music, including their albums and the best compilations of their singles.

The day she picks up Suzanne at the train station, Carrie-Anne runs into a couple of "railfans," people who photograph and videotape trains. The 2003 film The Station Agent (which tells the story of a dwarf railfan who inherits an old railroad depot) is a good example of the typical "railfan life."

In this folder you'll find information on the subject of trains, one of the railfans who helped with the film, and other matters related to this unusual-but-interesting hobby.

PAUL D. SCHNEIDER'S RAILROAD DOCUMENTARIES

These one-hour shows look at a specific region or city in North America and blend history, maps, interviews and shots of trains in action. One of the series' best sellers is 'Cascade Crossing' in western Oregon, which includes an awesome winter ride over the Cascade Mountains in the cab of an Amtrak locomotive, and 'Mojave Mainline,' which examines the old Santa Fe Railway main line across the exotic Mojave desert in southern California.

TRAIN LINKS

Several shows have won Telly Awards, the industry award for non-broadcast media. For more information on the shows, click on this link: HERE.

Paul also recommends the following sites for anyone interested in North American railroading.

The monthly magazine CTC BOARD is regarded by many railfans as the best railfan magazine in North America. Every issue contains news, feature stories on both contemporary and historical railroading, and loads of great photography. Click HERE to check it out.

CTC BOARD published Hundman Publishing Co. also published an array of high-quality hardcover railroad books on a variety of subjects such as the old Northern Pacific and Louisville & Nashville. Check out their stuff - click HERE.
